TNRCC, Jiffy Lube Kick Off Used Oil Recycling Campaign; Program Targets Driver's Education Students, Families

HOUSTON--Oct. 20, 1999--Jiffy Lube International, a wholly owned subsidiary of Pennzoil-Quaker State Company , announced today that it is delivering information to driver's education students throughout Texas about the importance of proper oil recycling and the effects of spilled oil on the environment. The driver's education program was underwritten by the Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission (TNRCC) and developed in conjunction with TNRCC and the Texas Education Agency (TEA).
Dubbed "Oil and Water Don't Mix," the program is designed to make students and their families more aware of the problems and solutions associated with used oil and filter disposal. The program also offers tips on general automotive maintenance.
"In our initial focus groups with emerging drivers and driver education teachers in Texas, the single thing most noted by each group was the lack of materials and resources on general auto maintenance and its impact on the environment," said Jiffy Lube's President Marc C. Graham. "Many students said they wanted to learn more about how to take good care of their cars and trucks, and most agreed that they wanted to do everything they could to take good care of the air they breathe and the water they drink."
Each driver's education teacher will receive a packet containing a teacher's manual, student handbooks, poster, video, wallet reminder cards and under-the-hood stickers. These are being distributed to 4,600 driver's education instructors working within 2,100 independent school districts, as well as teachers at commercial driver's education schools.
In addition, Texas high schools are receiving oil-recycling workbooks to complement community service endeavors by student councils. In November, eighth graders will receive a science workbook that gives instructions about how the proper disposal of motor oil protects the environment.
Outlets such as Jiffy Lube, Wal-Mart and Sam's will use the remainder of the grant -- $1.2 million -- to install or update existing used oil collection centers across Texas.
Each year it is estimated that about 120 million gallons of used oil reaches gutters or drains, or gets dumped in back yards or vacant lots. Such dumping is not only illegal and a significant cause of water pollution, but wastes a valuable, non-renewable resource.
Texas law requires that used oil be properly handled and taken to a registered collection center for recycling. The educational materials being offered by Jiffy Lube, through the grant from the TNRCC Used Oil Recycling Fund, focus on why participation in this effort by everyone is important.

Fast lubes were pioneered in 1979 by Jiffy Lube, now a wholly owned subsidiary of Pennzoil-Quaker State Company. With the merger of Pennzoil and Quaker State in December 1998, some 600 Q-Lubes were added to the more than 1,500 Jiffy Lube service centers across the country. Conversion of the majority of these Q-Lube service centers to the Jiffy Lube banner is underway.
