Toshiba Announces Its Surface Mount LED Solution for the Automotive Market; First to Offer an LED with a Diffused Lens
IRVINE, Calif.--Oct. 18, 1999--Toshiba America Electronic Components Inc. (TAEC) announced its line-up of visible Surface Mount Device (SMD) Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) aimed at the automotive market. The new line-up consists of both diffused and clear lens types. Toshiba is the first to offer the diffused lens type in the market. Due to the uniform light pattern, a diffused lens is ideal for instrumentation and switch lighting.
The 1102 series consists of eleven diffused lens diodes and the 1100 series consists of eleven clear lens diodes. The new line-up of SMD automotive LEDs are some of the brightest offered in the industry today, with up to 650 millicandelas (mcd) typical at 562 to 636 nanometers (nm), peak wavelength. With the newly designed diffused lens, and its dome lens design, the 1102 series enables a higher level of luminosity to be focused on a target surface. The diffused light pattern allows the LED to illuminate a specific area versus the non-directed flat-top lenses found with traditional LEDs currently available in the market.
"The diffused lens LED is very meaningful to the automotive industry because of its unique lens design. It provides a focused viewing angle which directs the light output in an even pattern for both interior and exterior automotive applications," stated Malcolm Wood, business development manager for Toshiba's optoelectronic products. "With its focused viewing angle and diffused emission pattern, it allows designers to use fewer diodes than needed in previous designs, while still achieving the illumination needed."
Toshiba's new SMD LEDs are primarily targeted toward automotive applications for use in interior designs, such as backlighting and switch illumination, as well as exterior applications that include the CHMSL and turn signals. Additional applications include audio, climate control and other indicator backlighting.
The diffused lens is offered in a 2.8-millimeter (mm) diameter lens-type and the clear lens is offered in a flat-top type. Both LEDs have an extended temperature range for both operating and storage conditions at -40 to +100(Degree) Centigrade, meeting the automotive market needs, and are processed using a four-element Indium Gallium Aluminum Phosphide (InGaA(THETA)P) method. The diodes are offered in a large SMD package at 3.2 (L) x 2.8 (W) x 1.9 (H) mm with a low power consumption and a forward voltage (Vf) of 2.0 to 2.8 V.
