Delphi's MagneRide(TM) Technology Earns Equip'Auto AwardPARIS, Oct. 15 -- Delphi Automotive Systems' technology leadership has been recognized by an association of 30 leading French automotive journalists covering the 1999 Equip'Auto vehicle and aftermarket show. At a ceremony on Friday, October 15, Delphi Automotive received the "Grand Prix Internationaux de la Creation Technique" (Grand Prize for New International Technology) for MagneRide(TM), a continuously variable valveless real-time damping suspension system that uses a magnetically-controlled damping fluid. The journalists reviewed the featured technologies at Equip'Auto and chose MagneRide as the best new technology at the show. "We are extremely pleased to have our MagneRide technology recognized by this prestigious group of French auto journalists," said Guy C. Hachey, president, Delphi Chassis Systems and vice-president, Delphi Automotive Systems. "Not only does MagneRide take continuously variable damping to a much higher level of effectiveness, it is truly representative of our next generation of global systems, with development work done cooperatively at our technical centers in Europe and North America. MagneRide is Delphi's first commercial application of a new generation of 'smart materials' currently being developed in Delphi engineering centers around the globe." MagneRide represents a further refinement of Delphi's valve-based real-time damping systems currently offered by Cadillac (Stabilitrak(TM)) and Corvette (Active Handling(TM)). An electro-magnet in the damper piston uses signals from an on-board computer to change the flow properties of the damper fluid up to 1,000 times per second, providing an instantaneous adjustment of the ride characteristics of the vehicle. The result is a much smoother ride over rough roads, instantaneously adjusting to a stiffer suspension for more difficult or unexpected driving situations. MagneRide is both energy-efficient and cost-effective. Under peak loads, the system uses only about as much power as a 75 watt light bulb. MagneRide is cost competitive with existing valve-based real-time damping systems, representing added value for the consumer. The first systems will be appearing on passenger vehicles in 2003.
