Mobil and Qatar Shipping Take Delivery of New Crude Carrier
ULSAN, Korea--Oct. 13, 1999--The Ras Laffan, a new Aframax double-hull crude carrier, was delivered to QM Tanker Co., LLC, a joint venture company owned 50/50 by Mobil Shipping and Transportation Company (MOSAT) and Qatar Shipping Company. The vessel was built by Hyundai Heavy Industries Company Ltd.
"We are pleased to add this new tanker to Mobil's service," said Gerhard Kurz, MOSAT president. "It represents the best the industry has to offer and incorporates the latest state-of-the-art double-hull design and technology, continuing our commitment to safety and environmental protection."
"We look forward to this partnership with Mobil and the longterm success of the new joint venture company," said Abdulaziz Salatt, director of Qatar Shipping Company and sponsor of the Ras Laffan.
The 105,775 deadweight-ton Ras Laffan is 800 feet (244 meters) long, 138 feet (42 meters) wide and can carry a cargo of 755,000 barrels of crude oil. The ship will be in service worldwide.
The ship's design exceeds the stringent tanker safety standards set out under the U.S. Oil Pollution Act of 1990 and the International Maritime Organization rules. "Building a safe ship is only one part of the safety equation," Kurz said. "We make sure that we have well-trained personnel and sound operating procedures, which are essential ingredients to the success of a high quality marine operation."
