NASCAR Winston West: Woodside Looking For A Hat Trick At Mesa Marin
14 October 1999
October 15, 1999 (Roseville, CA) - Sean Woodside will be looking for a hat trick in the Re-refined Oil 250 at Mesa Marin Raceway in Bakersfield, Calif. on October 17. A win this weekend would make it three in a row for Woodside, who won the Bud Pole Award and first place finishes in both the 1998 and 1997 events during Mesa Marin's popular October Classic weekend. A win this weekend would also strengthen Woodside's 47-point lead in the championship standings. Although the team has led the points standings since mid-August, the 1999 NASCAR Winston West points battle is the most intense ever seen in the series. A difference of just 166 points lies between first and 10th place with 12 of 14 races on the 1999 scheduled completed. At this point in the 1998 Winston West season, there was a 507-point difference between the first and tenth place contenders. With just two races left on the NASCAR Winston West schedule and a tight race such as this, the team's focus will be on performance. "We gave up some of our points lead in Las Vegas, but we didn't give up any of our focus," said Woodside, referring to a disappointing finish in the Gold Coast 150, following a bad crash during practice. "Both McAnally Racing and I have been very competitive at Mesa Marin in the past, and we know we have what it takes to win there. We're going to use everything we've got to bring in a win this weekend." Woodside knows Mesa Marin well. When the former Saugus Speedway closed down, Woodside transferred his Late Model effort to Mesa Marin, and became one of the track's strongest competitors. Since his Winston West debut in 1997, Woodside has collected two Bud Pole Awards, one top five and one top ten finish in addition to the two first place finishes at the Bakersfield ½-mile oval. Employees and guests of NAPA's Fresno distribution center, great supporters of the team whenever it visits Mesa Marin, will lend their support on Sunday. The team will join the distribution center's employees on Friday for a pre-race luncheon. Bill McAnally Racing (BMR) owns and operates the No. 16 NAPA Auto Parts/Martin Senour Automotive Finishes/NAPA Filters/California Integrated Waste Management Recycled Oil Program Chevrolet Monte Carlo NASCAR Winston West team with Sean Woodside as driver. They are leading the series in the points standings, the Gatorade Front Runner Award, the Clevite Engine Builder Award and Bud Pole Award races, laps led, laps completed and best average finish. Current season results include one win, three top five, eight top ten finishes and two Bud Pole Awards. Woodside finished both the 1997 and 1998 seasons in second place in the Winston West points standings.
