Thrifty Car Rental Franchisees in San Francisco Purchase Bay Area Rentals
SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 11 -- Three local Thrifty Car Rental
franchise owners have purchased Bay Area Rentals, a local car, truck and van
rental company with 17 locations and approximately 1,100 cars.
Thrifty franchisee J.M.T. Leasing, Inc., owned by John and Jim Tennant,
has purchased 11 of the 17 Bay Area Rentals stores. Prior to the acquisition,
J.M.T. Leasing was already the largest locally-owned car rental operator in
Northern California.
With the purchase, the number of Thrifty Car Rental locations in the Bay
area will increase from 19 locations to 35. All are scheduled to be converted
to Thrifty Car Rental effective November 1, 1999. One Thrifty location will
be closed due to overlapping coverage with one of the Bay Area Rentals stores.
"With the purchase of these new locations, this further strengthens
Thrifty's local presence in the Bay area," said Tennant. "The acquisition of
Bay Area Rentals comes on the heels of our recent move into San Francisco
International's new consolidated car rental facility, which has already made a
huge impact on our ability to serve customers at the airport."
The remaining six Bay Area Rentals locations have been purchased by JJR,
Inc. and RPM Motors, L.L.C., both owned by Rod Henrikson of Antioch, and San
Ramon Carriage Co., Inc., owned by David and Barbara McDougall of Oakland.
All are longtime Thrifty Car Rental franchise owners.
According to Tennant, Thrifty plans to grow the locations significantly
over time, and expects to increase current fleet levels.
David McDougall, who is acquiring four of the Bay Area Rentals stores,
said, "The addition of these new locations will make Thrifty Car Rental an
even more convenient option for customers in the Bay Area."
Henrikson of San Ramon Carriage Co., Inc., who adds two new locations to
his Thrifty franchise, said, "This will make Thrifty an inescapable conclusion
for customers who see the Thrifty sign planted throughout the Bay area."
Wayne Batmale, owner of Bay Area Rentals, has been in the car rental
business since 1970 and will continue to be associated with Thrifty Car
Rental.
With the new acquisitions, Thrifty Car Rental has 35 locations in the Bay
area, including in-terminal facilities at San Francisco and Oakland airports,
and a location near the San Jose airport. In addition to its in-terminal
facility at San Francisco International Airport, Thrifty also has an off-
airport parking facility at the corner of Millbrae Avenue and Highway 101,
offering valet parking at rates consistently lower than its competitors. The
same location also has a retail car sale facility on the property, with a
complete range of "close-to-new" Daimler Chrysler cars and other vehicles.
