Mobil Grant to the American Red Cross to Provide Aid in the Franklin Area; Support Targeted for Southeastern Virginia, Northern New Jersey and the Philadelphia Area
FAIRFAX, Va.--Oct. 6, 1999--Mobil Corporation announced today a contribution of $50,000 to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund which will help flood victims of Hurricane Floyd, including those in the Franklin and southeastern Virginia, area."We are particularly appreciative of the efforts of S. W. Rawls, Inc., our Mobil gasoline distributor in the Franklin area, for making us aware of the problems faced by the citizens of southeastern Virginia," said Brian Baker, executive vice president of Mobil Oil Corporation.
"As a member of these communities, we believe it's important to step forward and help the American Red Cross provide relief for our neighbors and customers in their time of need," said Baker.
The rains associated with Hurricane Floyd resulted in extensive flooding and thousands of citizens along the East Coast being displaced for at least some period of time. In some communities, particularly in southern Virginia and North Carolina, thousands of residents still haven't been able to return to their homes and businesses.
"We feel privileged to help the American Red Cross assist victims of this severe storm," said Baker. "The agency deserves our respect for always being ready to help citizens faced with disaster."
In addition to providing support for southeastern Virginia, the Mobil grant targeted aid for Northern New Jersey and the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, area.
Mobil also announced that it will offer special payment arrangements to cardholders in good standing of active Mobil Credit Cards if they live in counties which were officially declared disaster areas in Florida, Georgia, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Virginia.
Red Cross caseworkers are now meeting one-on-one with individuals and families, providing financial support including help with rent for those who have lost their homes, financial assistance to replace essential items - such as mattresses, clothing and work tools, and guidance about other assistance programs. Since the hurricane struck, the American Red Cross has provided shelter and food for more than 200,000 people.
"Mobil's donation helps the American Red Cross meet the needs of the people devastated by this and other disasters," said Maurice Levite, acting vice president of Development at the American Red Cross.
"The Red Cross was there before Hurricane Floyd came ashore helping people to prepare. Now, we're helping people get back on their feet, addressing both physical and mental health needs. Thanks to this donation from Mobil, the Red Cross will be there as long as the need exists."
All American Red Cross disaster assistance is free, made possible by voluntary donations of time and money from the American people. To help the victims of this and other disasters, contributions can be made to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund by calling 1-800-HELP NOW or 1-800-257-7575 (Spanish).
