Circuit City Stores, Inc. Reports Record September Sales For the Circuit City Group and the CarMax GroupRICHMOND, Va., Oct. 6 -- Circuit City Stores, Inc. today reported September 1999 sales for the company, the Circuit City Group and the CarMax Group . Circuit City Stores, Inc. For the month, total sales for Circuit City Stores, Inc. rose 16 percent to $933.8 million from $806.5 million in September 1998. Circuit City Group Total sales for the Circuit City Group were $771.2 million, which represents an 11 percent increase from September 1998 sales of $694.0 million and a 6 percent increase in comparable store sales. "September's results were in line with our expectations and reflect an especially strong prior year comparable store sales increase of 11 percent," said Richard L. Sharp, Circuit City's chairman and chief executive officer. "We continued to see healthy sales growth across virtually all our major categories." CarMax Group Total sales for the CarMax Group were $162.6 million, which represents a 45 percent increase from September 1998 sales of $112.5 million and a 2 percent increase in comparable store sales. "The CarMax sales results reflect a continuation of the trends we saw through much of the summer, including continued strong new-car sales," said Sharp. "Hurricane Floyd significantly affected CarMax's sales as many of the East Coast stores were closed for varying periods of time surrounding the storm and consumers in these and other trade areas focused on the storm's impact." On September 1, CarMax opened a used-car superstore in Duarte, Calif. Circuit City is a leading national retailer of brand-name consumer electronics, personal computers, major appliances and entertainment software.
