Shareholder Acquires 5% of Rent-A-Wreck of America, Inc.'s Common Stock

    OWINGS MILLS, Md.--Oct. 1, 1999--Rent-A-Wreck of America, Inc., (NASDAQ-RAWA) announced today that it had received a Schedule 13D filing from Mr. Robert M. Temko of Newark, Delaware, who indicated that he has acquired in open market purchases from July 13, 1998 through September 15, 1999, 201,200 shares of Rent-A-Wreck's common stock, representing 5.1% of the total outstanding.
    Mr. Temko told the Company he is an investor who originally was attracted to the stock by its technical chart pattern but who, upon looking into the company further, was impressed with its fundamentals and decided to become a major, long-term shareholder because of his belief that the stock is materially undervalued.
    Mr. Temko has indicated that he may buy additional shares, although he has no definite plans to do so at this time.
