U.S. Trophy Team finishes sixth, club team takes fourth spot at 74th International Six Days Enduro

2 October 1999

PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- Despite extremely dusty conditions and higher speed

averages than at previous ISDEs, Team USA's elite Trophy Team finished sixth

among 18 teams, and the Salt Fork Dirt Riders -- the event's only over-40 club

team -- finished fourth at the 74th ISDE, held Sept. 13-18 in Coimbra, Portugal.

The Salt Fork Dirt Riders fourth-place finish was one of the bright spots

at this year's ISDE. Experience and patience were key to the team's strong

finish among 53 club teams. With more than 40 years of ISDE competition among

them, Salt Fork team members Terry Cunningham, Jeff Fredette and Drew Smith rode

conservatively through the blinding dust that claimed many riders and machines.

The Salt Fork Dirt Riders were the only U.S. club with all team members

finishing the entire event. For their efforts, all three members earned silver

medals, given to riders who finish within 40 percent of the class leader's

score.

Team USA's Trophy Team improved on last year's ninth-place finish with a

respectable sixth. But this success was again without second-year Trophy Team

rider Destry Abbott, who went out on Day Four when his engine seized. Perennial

top American finisher Ty Davis again claimed those honors, finishing 8th in the

250cc Two-Stroke class, good enough for a gold medal, given to riders who finish

within 10 percent of the class leader's score.

Right behind Davis were Russell Pearson in 11th and Patrick Garrahan in

19th, both earning gold medals. Randy Hawkins was the team's only competitor in

the 400cc Four-stroke class, where he finished eighth and earned a gold medal,

while Brian Garrahan's 44th-place finish in the 125cc class earned him a silver.

Made up of three ISDE first-timers, the four-member U.S. Junior Trophy team

finished last after losing two riders to mechanical problems. Despite the

low-visibility conditions, Clay Boreing took silver in the 250cc Two-stroke

class with a 57th-place finish, and Brian Brown finished 31st in the 125cc

class, good enough for a silver medal as well.

The first five days of the event were very dry and dusty, causing both

engine and visibility problems for the riders. On the final day's motocross

special test, heavy rains forced event officials to not count the final day's

results.

The 75th ISDE will be held Oct. 31-Nov. 5, 2000, near Granada, Spain.
