Dodge, Chrysler, Plymouth and Jeep(R) Set 1999 Model Year And Quarterly Sales Records; September Sales up 7 Percent
AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Oct. 1 -- DaimlerChrysler's
Dodge, Chrysler, Plymouth and Jeep(R) brands had their best model year in
history in 1999, selling 2,651,090 vehicles in the U.S., an 8 percent increase
compared to 1998's record model year sales of 2,446,951 vehicles. Third
quarter sales of 639,301 were also at an all-time high, a 9 percent increase
over sales of 590,109 during the same period in 1996, and the fourth
consecutive quarter in which those brands have posted record sales.
Total U.S. sales for September for the Dodge, Chrysler, Plymouth and Jeep
brands were 208,544, up 7 percent versus 1998. Record truck sales contributed
142,632, an 8 percent increase, including record sport utility vehicle sales
of 63,123, a 38 percent increase. Passenger cars, with sales of 65,912,
climbed 5 percent from September 1998 sales.
All of DaimlerChrysler brands sold 223,582 vehicles in the U.S. in
September, with Mercedes-Benz contributing 15,038 to the total, a 10 percent
increase for that brand compared to September 1998 sales of 13,728.
"Consumers liked our 1999 lineup so much, that not even the effect of
Hurricane Floyd could prevent us from having a record model year and a
substantial increase over September 1998," said Theodor R. Cunningham,
Executive Vice President of Global Sales and Marketing. "Our lineup for 2000
is even more enticing, with the new Dodge Dakota Quad Cab going on sale in
November, and the spring launch of the highly-anticipated Chrysler PT Cruiser,
which has already captured both early awards and the hearts of buyers."
Dodge, Chrysler, Plymouth and Jeep set 16 model year records, 15 quarterly
records and 13 monthly records for the period ended in September. Among the
model year records: sport utility vehicles, with sales of 731,251, up 24
percent from last year's 590,759; truck sales of 1,902,792 million, up 10
percent from 1,723,798 million in 1998; (Chrysler and Dodge brand) Large
sedans at 285,722, a 67 percent increase compared to 1998; Dodge brand sales
of 1,509,547, a 9 percent increase versus sales of 1,382,650 in 1998; Jeep,
with sales of 539,602, up 16 percent from last year; Dodge Ram Pickup,
439,035, an 11 percent increase compared to 1998's 394,958; Dodge Durango,
191,649, a 52 percent leap compared to 1998's 126,397; Jeep Grand Cherokee,
288,264, up 21 percent from 1998; Jeep Wrangler, 88,908, an 8 percent increase
compared to last year; the Chrysler 300M, 55,865, up 229 percent from 1998's
16,972; and the Company's world-leading minivans, at 513,263 sales, were
within 2 percent of the 1998 model year volume.
