Toyota Reports Best-Ever Third Quarter and September Sales: Posts Sixth Consecutive Monthly Sales RecordTORRANCE, Calif., Oct. 1 -- Toyota Motor Sales (TMS) U.S.A., Inc., today reported best-ever September sales of 119,825 vehicles up 10.4 percent over last September's record-setting sales. This is Toyota's sixth-consecutive month of record-breaking sales, and the seventh since the beginning of the year. "Nine months of sustained industry growth has surprised everyone," said Jim Press, TMS executive vice president. "An explosion of all-time sales records in the final quarter will close out the millennium with a bang." Sales for the first three quarters of 1999 totaled 1,101,559, an increase of 10.5 percent compared to the same period last year. This is the first time in Toyota's 42-year history in the U.S. that they have eclipsed the one-million sales mark by the end of the third quarter. Both TMS sales divisions recorded best-ever September sales. The Toyota Division posted sales of 106,151 units, up 10.3 percent over last September. The Lexus Division sold 13,674 units, an increase of 11.4 percent compared to September 1998. Toyota Division best-ever September passenger car sales were lead by Camry, up 18.8 percent with 38,931 units sold. These figures represent a best-ever September for Camry and push CYTD sales to 349,915, a 15.6 percent increase for the year. Corolla sales also increased for the month, up 2.7 percent, to 19,821. Total Toyota Division light truck sales rose 19.1 percent, to 42,972, for a best-ever September. Aiding that increase were sales of the Toyota Tacoma compact pickup truck which totaled 13,153 units for the month, a 10.2 percent increase. The Sienna minivan recorded best-ever September sales of 8,292, up 23.7 percent, and the all-new Tundra full-size pickup had another strong month with sales of 5,699. The Toyota Land Cruiser also had a strong month with best-ever September sales of 1,262, up 9.1 percent. The Lexus Division continues its hot streak with a September sales jump of 39.0 percent for its RX 300, to 5,520 units, and an increase 2.5 percent for the LX 470. The Lexus GS 300 performance sedan enjoyed September sales of 2,211, up 44.6 percent. Sales of North American-built vehicles accounted for 66.8 percent of total September sales, up from 64.2 percent the previous year.
