Mitsubishi Motors Has Best-Ever September Sales in the U.S.
         Increase of 36% Over September 1998 Contributes to Company's
                    Highest Quarterly Sales in its History

    CYPRESS, Calif., Oct. 1 -- September 1999 sales for
Mitsubishi Motors Sales of America, Inc. (MMSA) totaled 22,001 units, an
increase of 36% over the prior year:

    -- Year-to-date sales for MMSA are up 24% over the prior year, a total of
       181,380
    -- Sales for the third quarter of 1999, 71,271 units, reflect the highest
       quarterly sales in MMSA's history
    -- September became the third month in a row of "best ever" monthly sales
       for MMSA
    -- September also marked the first time the company has had three
       consecutive months of sales above 20,000 units; MMSA has had five
       months in 1999 that it sold more than 20,000 units -- the first time
       in its history
    -- Galant mid-size sedan sales for September totaled 7,398 units, an
       increase of 57% over the prior year; sales of Galant are up
       59% year-to-date
    -- Eclipse sport coupe monthly sales reached 5,282 units, an increase of
       36% over the prior year; MMSA reports strong sales of the all-new 2000
       model, and inventory of the previous generation 1999 model are
       practically depleted
    -- Montero Sport mid-size SUV sales reached 3,983 units, an increase of
       31% over September 1998
    -- Other Mitsubishi Motors' models also had increased sales, including
       Mirage 4-door (up 96%), Diamante luxury sedan (up 27%) and Montero
       luxury SUV (up 6%)

    "Mitsubishi Motors' sales increases in the U.S. continue to be strong,
outpacing not only other Japanese distributors, but the overall industry as
well," said Pierre Gagnon, executive vice president and chief operating
officer for MMSA.  "Our turnaround strategy in this market is working, backed
by hot new products like the all-new 2000 Eclipse, significantly updated
Montero Sport and the continued success of Galant."
    Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America, Inc. was established in 1982 by
Mitsubishi Motors Corporation, Tokyo, and markets a full line of vehicles,
including coupes, convertibles, sedans and sport utility vehicles.
