Ride for Kids - September 19, 1999, Columbia, MD
27 September 1999
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE On Sunday morning, September 19, nearly 800 riders raised a record $121,000 at the annual Columbia Ride for Kids in Maryland. Nationally, the record pace continues with over $1.38M raised, an 18% increase over 1998. It was a perfect fall day for riding after a tumultuous week of preparation Hurricane Floyd. Many riders who came to the event were still without power in their homes but like most motorcyclists, once their minds are made up to help children in need, they will ride through any kind of weather or conditions to get to their destination. A special surprise for the crowd was when Virginia motorcycle road racer Joe Nagy came up on stage to share his personal experience with his recent brain tumor and how important it was for everyone to be there. For many motorcyclists in the audience Joe's success story was both close to home and very uplifting. A pat on the back for the riders also came from Sue Wilson, mother of patient Elijah Wilson and an agent with Ride for Kids sponsor Allstate Insurance Company. The top fundraisers on stage were led by Bob Henig of Bob's BMW with $12,494. Bob's BMW was also the top dealer with $22,484 in donations. The top motorcycle chapter was Ray Wilt's Honda Rider's Club with $9,398 turned in. Jackie Cooke was the proud winner of the new Honda motorcycle. Watch for a report later this week on the Sacramento Ride for Kids completed this past Sunday, September 26 in California.
