Delphi Demonstrates Value to OEM Customers at Manufacturing Level

Delphi Demonstrates Value to OEM Customers at Manufacturing Level
TROY, Mich., Sept. 27 -- At a major trade show this week,
Delphi Automotive Systems will demonstrate how it delivers value
to the OEM customer at the manufacturing level.
Delphi executives and manufacturing managers will emphasize this
competitive advantage at the Society of Automotive Engineers' Southern
Automotive Manufacturing Conference and Exposition, Sept. 28-30 in Birmingham,
Ala., USA.
The event, sponsored by Mercedes-Benz U.S. International (MBUSI), brings
together the industry's leading manufacturing experts for factory tours,
special events, panel discussions and demonstrations of the latest
manufacturing technology.
Delphi's technology and customer support highlights will be led by its
modular cockpit capabilities. Since introducing modular cockpits in 1993,
Delphi's volume has increased to more than 700,000 units annually. Delphi
currently produces modular cockpits for DaimlerChrysler, Fiat and General
Motors.
Working with MBUSI, Delphi not only had significant design input on the M-
Class vehicle, but continues to manage the entire cockpit supply chain and
just-in-time, sequenced-in-line delivery system for them.
    Other Delphi technology highlights include:

E*STEER(TM) Electric Power Steering system. Delphi's E*STEER(TM), which
recently debuted on the Fiat SpA Punto, delivers tremendous manufacturing
benefits from its modular design complete with an integrated controller
option. The number of components to assemble is reduced from 15 with a
hydraulic system to only 2 with the modular E*STEER(TM) column-mount system --
reducing assembly time by up to 3.5 minutes.
Advanced Safety Interior. ASI is an evolving portfolio of safety
technologies designed to provide unparalleled protection in frontal, side and
rear collisions, and in vehicle rollover situations.

Delphi executives and managers also will address industry issues during
panel discussions and conference sessions. Highlights include:

World Class Manufacturing Practices (panel discussion, Tuesday, Sept. 28,
9:30 to 11:15 a.m. ET, Ballroom "A"). Dr. Andrew Brown Jr., Delphi Automotive
Systems director of engineering, will join two senior executives from Toyota
Motor Manufacturing, Inc., and Mercedes-Benz U.S. International. The panel
discussion will focus on manufacturing competitiveness and the importance of
using industry-leading practices.
Assuring a Lean Manufacturing Environment through Integrated New Model
Preparation Activities (session, Tuesday, Sept. 28, 3:15 to 4:45 p.m. ET, Room
"L"). Thomas Gann, director of manufacturing engineering for Delphi Interior
Systems will present on how Delphi processes ensure successful model launches
for Delphi customers. Gann is one of three speakers in this session organized
by Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky, Inc.
Quality & Organizational Structure (panel discussion, Wednesday, Sept. 29,
10 to 11:30 a.m. ET, Ballroom "A"). Chris Duda, Delphi customer manager for
the Mercedes-Benz U.S. International account, will present Delphi's learnings
from its experience in support of the Mercedes-Benz M-class vehicle program.
Warranty Improvement Initiatives (session, Wednesday, Sept. 29, 1:15 to
2:45 p.m. ET, Room "B"). Scott Mitchell, Delphi's director of manufacturing
operations, will lead one of three presentations, discussing the importance of
warranty and quality improvement plans, cost reduction, and the need for a
strong OEM/supplier relationship when resolving problems and implementing
changes. Managers from Mercedes-Benz U.S. International and General Motors
Corp. also will present.
