General Semiconductor Further Enhances Its Automotive Quality Ratings With Addition of VDA 6.1

MELVILLE, N.Y.--Sept. 27, 1999--General Semiconductor, Inc. , a leading manufacturer of discrete semiconductors, announced that its small signal products facilities located in Freiburg Germany and Colmar France have received their first certification audit for VDA 6.1 (German Automotive Certification).
The VDA 6.1 designation is a quality management standard, designed by the German automotive industry and used by both the German and French automobile manufacturers.
In addition to the VDA 6.1 designation at Colmar and Frieberg, General Semiconductor's facility located in Tianjin China was recently awarded the QS 9000 certification. QS 9000 is a widely recognized quality standard, developed by U.S. automotive manufacturers and, like the VDA 6.1 designation, granted on a factory-by-factory basis.
The QS 9000 designation allows manufacturers to self-qualify their products, based on factory certification. With the Tianjin award, all General Semiconductor facilities shipping finished product now have QS 9000 certification.
"General Semiconductor is proud of our record serving the automotive industry and value these qualifications which are a key to our positioning," stated Ronald A. Ostertag, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. "Today, automotive customers, with their need for high quality products, account for nearly 20% of our business. We are committed to continual quality improvement, to ensure that we exceed our customers' expectations," he continued.
In addition to the VDA 6.1 and QS 9000 certifications, all of General Semiconductor's factories have ISO qualifications. France, Germany, Ireland and Taiwan are ISO 9001 qualified (certification for both manufacturing and research and development) and China is ISO 9002 qualified (certification for manufacturing).
General Semiconductor, Inc. is a market leader in the discrete segment of the semiconductor industry with manufacturing facilities in China, France, Germany, Ireland, Taiwan and the United States. The Company provides customers with a broad array of power rectifiers, transient voltage suppressors and small signal transistors and diodes. It has a diversified customer base, in terms of geography and end-use markets. Customers include leading manufacturers, located around the globe, of consumer electronics, lighting, telecommunications equipment, computers, automotive and automotive aftermarket products.
