Gensym Introduces D-SCOR for Supply-Chain Planning and Management; Software Brings Supply-Chain Council's SCOR Model to Life

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--Sept. 17, 1999--Gensym Corporation , a leading provider of intelligent operations management software, today announced introduction of its D-SCOR product, which extends the ability of large organizations to plan and manage their supply-chain operations. D-SCOR dynamically models and simulates supply-chains using the Supply-Chain Council's Supply-Chain Operations Reference model (SCOR). Gensym is introducing D-SCOR at the European Supply-Chain World Conference in Amsterdam, on September 20, 1999.
"Supply-chain planning and management is a critical concern for many large organizations," said Mark Whitworth, vice president and general manager of Gensym's Advanced Systems Business Unit. "Supply-chains are being pushed beyond their performance limits by rising consumer expectations for new products and services, faster delivery, and personal attention. At the same time, supply-chains have become more complex as organizations integrate more tightly with their vendors and customers. And while globalization and e-commerce offer new business opportunities, they also overwhelm decision-makers with a whole new set of supply-chain alternatives. D-SCOR will help executives evaluate those alternatives and select the most effective supply-chain configurations, policies, and practices."
Herbert Heinzel, Management Consulting Partner at Siemens Business Services and the Supply-Chain Council's European Chairman, stated, "I have been an early supporter of Gensym's D-SCOR development. D-SCOR adds another dimension to SCOR by enabling Supply-Chain Council members to simulate their supply-chains, analyze their performance, and evaluate alternative supply-chain strategies. D-SCOR could be used by an entire set of companies for supply-chain-wide planning. We, at Siemens, see tremendous value in D-SCOR."
Koei Ohgi, General Manager of the Supply-Chain Management Consulting practice at Itochu Techno-Science Corporation (CTC), said, "We have been working with early versions of D-SCOR and are very pleased with its capabilities for enabling us to improve our customers' supply-chain operations. As one of Japan's leading computer-services companies, we have been previewing D-SCOR with our large corporate customers-- Japanese companies that have long been leaders in supply-chain management. CTC has formed a D-SCOR task force to respond to the strong interest that these customers are expressing."
Chris Holt, director of Ernst & Young's Accelerated Strategic Modeling Environment for Supply-Chain, stated, "D-SCOR promises to be an effective vehicle for Ernst & Young to deliver exceptional value to our clients. In conjunction with Gensym's intelligent agents, the D-SCOR framework provides interesting potential for generating original solutions to frequent supply-chain problems. We at Ernst & Young expect to assist our clients in analyzing their business problems by using D-SCOR to visualize and improve their operations."

    About D-SCOR

D-SCOR is Gensym's new product for dynamically modeling and simulating supply-chains using SCOR. D-SCOR allows organizations to quickly evaluate the performance of alternative supply-chain configurations, policies, and practices based on actual operational data. It supports critical supply-chain decisions such as make vs. buy, centralized vs. distributed operations, facility location, single-vendor vs. multi-vendor sourcing, and how to best respond to changes in the market. D-SCOR offers these unique capabilities:

-- Rapid development of SCOR models through an easy-to-use graphical, drag and drop, object-oriented interface.

-- Animated simulation showing supply-chain operation over time for realistic representation of supply-chain behavior.

-- Automatic computation and tracking of SCOR performance metrics to support comparative analysis and benchmarking.

-- Concurrent support for multiple models, allowing side-by-side comparison of alternative supply-chain configurations, policies, and practices under different real-world scenarios.

-- Extensibility, enabling development of custom functions and interfaces to real data sources and integration with Gensym's family of proven, real-time technologies for intelligent operations management.

Lowell Hawkinson, Gensym's chairman and chief executive officer, said, "D-SCOR is another example of Gensym's continued investment in application products that solve critical business problems. D-SCOR is a natural extension of the success we have achieved with our existing G2 and ReThink products in helping organizations such as the U.S. Department of Defense, Mobil, Cargill, EDS, IBM, and ISCOR to more intelligently manage their supply-chain activities."

    Availability and Support

Now in beta testing, D-SCOR is scheduled for release in Gensym's partner channels during Q4 1999 and for general release during Q1 2000. Gensym also provides customer support services, training, and consulting.

    About SCOR

Developed by the Supply-Chain Council (http://www.supply-chain.org), SCOR is a high-level, cross-industry reference of supply-chain metrics, best practices and supporting technologies. SCOR promotes strategic planning, tactical planning, and benchmarking by communicating an entire supply-chain in a standard manner. It spans the supply-chain from the customer's customer to the supplier's supplier and embraces all industries.
