Stater Bros. Announces the Largest Supermarket Chain Sponsored Event in America    
            10th Annual Stater Bros. Route 66 Rendezvous Will Run
       From Thursday, September 16, Through Sunday, September 19, 1999

    COLTON, Calif., Sept. 16 -- Stater Bros. Markets, the largest
employer in the Inland Empire of Southern California, is proud to announce its
title sponsorship of the biggest car show on the West Coast and the largest
Supermarket Chain sponsored event in America.  The Stater Bros. Route 66
Rendezvous will begin today and run through Sunday, September 19, along the
historic streets of downtown San Bernardino.  This is the tenth year that
Stater Bros. has supported the event and the third straight year that it has
been the title sponsor.

    The 10th Annual Stater Bros. Route 66 Rendezvous is expected to draw a
record breaking attendance of nearly 500,000 car enthusiasts, and there will
be 2,448 registered participants showcasing their classic cars, hot rods and
custom vehicles.  The 2,448 registered cars commemorates the total mileage
from Chicago to Santa Monica along the original Route 66 Highway.
    Selected as the "Best Special Event" by the California Department of
Tourism, the Stater Bros. Route 66 Rendezvous will feature American made 1972
and older classic vehicles cruising the streets in addition to live music,
food, and entertainment for the whole family.  The Stater Bros. vintage 1948
Diamond T Restored Truck will be on display throughout the event and will be
part of the Stater Bros. promotional area at the corner of "D" and Court
Streets in downtown San Bernardino.
    One of the highlights of the event is the induction ceremony for the
Cruisin' Hall of Fame.  This year's inductees include Drag Racer Don Garlits,
The GTO Automobile, Motor Trend Magazine, and the 1960's singing duo Jan and
Dean.  Jack H. Brown, the Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of
Stater Bros. Markets, will have the honor of presenting the Cruisin' Hall of
Fame Award to Jan and Dean at this year's induction ceremony on Saturday,
September 18, at 11 a.m.
    Stater Bros. Markets currently operates 155 Supermarket locations, with
46 in San Bernardino County, 40 in Riverside County, 30 in Orange County,
27 in Los Angeles County, 10 in Northern San Diego County, and 2 in Kern
County.  There are over 13,000 members of the Stater Bros. "Family" of
