IAA 1999: Nokia Presents Solutions for the (Auto)Mobile Information Society
FRANKFURT, Germany, Sept. 15 -- At the International
Automobile Show (IAA) in Frankfurt (September 16 - 26, 1999), the Finnish
telecommunications company Nokia focuses on products for the "(auto)mobile
information society." In Hall 9/Stand D24, Nokia presents its 1999 product
innovations -- "Connecting People" -- at meeting point future in
Frankfurt/Main.
Nokia Smart Traffic Products introduces at IAA '99 its Telematics Unit
and the recently launched powerful GSM car phone Nokia 6090, which was
designed to meet the increasing demands of professional car phone users. Its
8 W transmission/receiving unit incorporated in the Nokia 6090 guarantees
reliable connectivity within the GSM network. It enables mobile data transfer
thanks to its built-in modem. The Nokia 6090 also includes a serial RS232
interface for connecting to your computer and can be controlled via AT
commands.
The main thrust of Nokia Smart Traffic's strategy focuses on the
intelligent interplay between "total mobility" and "total integration" in
the vehicle -- the start of the second generation in telematics. According
to Nokia, "innovative mobility" will be made possible by linking a personified
profile of what motorists require with technologically advanced solutions --
in hardware as well as software.
An in-car Internet connection which makes the choice of the terminal
equipment secondary is the primary prerequisite for transforming these visions
into reality. Nokia Smart Traffic Products predicts that every vehicle will
be equipped with at least one Internet address by the year 2010. Nokia plans
to introduce the first terminal equipment to be compatible with the second
telematics generation by the end of 2001.
