Touring: Mercedes-Benz to Run 2000 CLK in New German Touring Car Championship Series

    FRANKFURT, Germany (Sept. 15, 1999) -- Mercedes-Benz presented the new 
CLK in its DTM 2000 livery Monday at the Frankfurt International Motor Show 
(IAA).  DTM 2000 is the new Germany Touring Car Championship series.
    Based on a set of low-cost technical regulations, the 10-event series 
ensures equal opportunity for all vehicles in conjunction with 
stock-appearing bodywork to make the cars easily identifiable. 
    The regulations specify two-door production models with at least four 
seats and an overall length between 4.30 meters (14 feet, two inches) and 
4.70 meters (15 feet, five inches), as well as precisely defined minimum 
interior dimensions. The cars' weight must be at least 2,315 pounds. To 
obtain homologation, at least 10,000 units must be produced within twelve 
months. Like the production version, bodywork must be made of steel. 
    The new touring cars will be powered by low-maintenance 4.0-liter, 
90-degree V8 engines with a minimum weight just less than 364 pounds. To 
reduce racing costs, engines may not be replaced during the season.
    A safety driver's cell made of a carbon fiber composite and integrated in 
the tubular frame chassis is specified, extending from the pedals to the head 
restraint. Front and side structures must pass FIA crash tests.
    DTM 2000 events will be staged on race tracks in Germany (Hockenheimring, 
Nur-burgring, Norisring, Oschersleben, Sachsenring and Lausitzring).
