PACCAR Endorses ATA Trucking Industry Image Campaign

BELLEVUE, Wash.--Sept. 14, 1999--"The North American trucking industry today moves more goods to more people in more places than ever before in its history. We are proud that the industry's safety record continues to improve even as freight volumes increase," said Mark C. Pigott, PACCAR chairman and CEO.
As impressive as the industry's progress in highway safety has been, research has shown that many consumers simply are unaware of the significant strides the industry has made over the years. Nor are they aware of the critical role the trucking industry plays in their lives. "It's a story that needs to be told," said Pigott.
To help tell the story, PACCAR is actively promoting the American Trucking Associations' (ATA) image campaign to heighten public awareness of the positive impacts of the trucking industry. The campaign will begin with advertising in general interest and business news publications before the ATA convention in October.
The national advertising will be followed by grassroots efforts aimed at bringing the updated image campaign to the state and local levels and to ensure long-term results.
The need for such a campaign grew out of studies conducted by ATA earlier in the year. The research pointed out that, while people understood the importance of trucking to business and commerce, they were less aware of progress made in truck safety. In addition, the research suggested a strong positive image for trucking was lacking.
"One of PACCAR's business objectives always has been to be the safety leader for the truck driver and the motoring public as well. We have been very successful in achieving that goal," said David Hovind, PACCAR president. "The entire commercial vehicle industry -- from manufacturers to drivers -- has made tremendous measurable progress in highway safety over the years.
"That's why we as an industry need to step forward now and inform the public about the positive impact that trucking has on their lives, and the extent to which it has contributed to the dynamic economic growth of the country," he added.
The ATA, based in Alexandria, Virginia, represents the trucking industry at the federal and state government levels. Through educational programs and industry research, the ATA promotes highway and driver safety as well as a healthy business environment for the trucking industry.
PACCAR, an $8 billion company, is a leader in the design, development and manufacture of high-quality light-, medium- and heavy-duty trucks under the Kenworth, Peterbilt, DAF and Foden nameplates. It also provides financial services and distributes truck parts related to its principal business. In addition, the Bellevue, Wash.-based company manufactures industrial winches.
PACCAR shares are traded on the Nasdaq exchange, symbol PCAR, and its homepage can be found at www.paccar.com.
