England's Metropolitan Police Order SmarTire
RICHMOND, British Columbia--Sept. 14, 1999-- England's Metropolitan Police has launched a major road safety initiative by becoming the first police force in the United Kingdom (UK) to order tire pressure monitoring systems for its vehicles. The force placed an initial order from SmarTire Systems' European subsidiary, SmarTire (Europe) Limited, to be installed in its rapid response fleet. There are a total of 52 police forces within the UK. The decision reflects the force's commitment to its safe driving program and is designed to improve road safety and security for police officers and the general public. The SmarTire monitoring system uses the latest wireless technology to constantly monitor tire pressures enabling police drivers to gain optimum handling and performance on the road at all times. Sensors on the wheel rim inside each tire transmit tire pressure and temperature data by radio frequency to a dashboard monitor. Drivers are alerted to unsafe levels via visual and audible warnings from the monitor.
The system has just gained Home Office VIDG(1) standards for use in all emergency vehicles including police cars, fire engines and ambulances in the UK. Industry research shows vehicles operating at optimum tire pressures are proven to grip the road better and perform more fuel efficiently. Also, early warning of a slow leak allows officers to ensure their vehicles are in proper condition to respond to an emergency.
Metropolitan Police Fleet Engineering Manager, Dick French said: "We are committed to safe driving and maintaining our vehicles to the highest standards using the latest equipment. Once the SmarTire system gained VIDG approval we carried out our own testing and research and I believe its installation is in the interests of police officers, road users and pedestrians. This scheme will be extended if it proves successful."
Ian Bateman, Managing Director, SmarTire Europe, said: "This agreement reflects the increasing importance of tire pressure monitoring and we look forward to a close working relationship with the Metropolitan Police and other police forces throughout the UK. The SmarTire system can be fitted on all passenger cars and is suitable for any drivers who are concerned about tire safety and performance and wish to avoid being left stranded at the roadside with a puncture."
SmarTire Systems Inc. develops and markets proprietary tire monitoring systems for the North American and European automotive aftermarkets. Through their strategic alliance, SmarTire Systems and TRW Inc. are committed to providing superior tire monitoring systems for both aftermarket and original equipment applications.
