World-Renowned Author Helps Kick-Off Delco Remy International's Lean Thinking Initiative
    ANDERSON, Ind., Sept. 14 -- Delco Remy International, Inc.
, has brought world-class Lean Thinking to central Indiana.  Delco
Remy America, a subsidiary of Delco Remy International (DRI), was the site of
DRI's launch of Lean Thinking(SM) Initiative.  Attending the kick-off as
featured guest speaker was world-renowned author of "The Machine That Change
The World," James P. Womack, founder and president of the Lean Enterprise
Institute(SM.)
    A two-day workshop using a Lean Manufacturing Technique was conducted by
co-author of "Learning to See," Mike Rother, and Rick Harris, president of
Harris Lean Systems, in preparation for the completion of their new book to be
published by Womack's Lean Enterprise Institute.  Attendees included all DRI
general managers from DRI national and international units.
    "Lean Thinking(SM) is a strategy for growth by focusing on customer value.
It is revolutionizing industries across the world as global competition
intensifies," said DRI Chairman, Harold K. Sperlich.  "We have over
35 operations around the country and around the world.  To expand
successfully, we must use one common approach to running our businesses --
that is, Lean Thinking."
    Dr. Womack is the crusader for Lean Thinking in North America and co-
author of two best sellers on lean enterprise including "The Machine that
Changed the World."  The Lean Enterprise Institute(SM) is a non-profit
educational and research organization formed to advance a set of ideas known
as Lean Production and Lean Thinking(SM).  In addition, Dr. Womack has had a
research affiliation with MIT since 1975 where he studied the Toyota
Production System.  Lean techniques, pioneered by Toyota, have been
successfully implemented by companies such as Harley-Davidson, Pratt Whitney
and Dell Computers.
    "Lean Enterprise is built on two fundamental principles:  accelerated
value flow and the elimination of waste.  The hallmarks of Lean Enterprise are
teamwork, communication, and efficient use of resources," said Thomas J.

we will implement Lean Enterprise Thinking across the board."
