CASCAR: Kennington claims CARQUEST 200; Thomson finishes fourth to secure Eastern title
13 September 1999
FREDERICTON, NB - DJ Kennington collected his second career CASCAR Castrol Super Series win, at Fredericton's New Brunswick Int'l Speedway, on Sunday afternoon. The Castrol Dodge driver started second in the 22 car field and took the lead from fellow Dodge driver Ron Beauchamp on lap 2 and led the rest of the way to win the Eastern series' final race of the '99 season; the CARQUEST 200. Al Turner finished second in the race, but the Barrie, ON racer had nothing for the winner, from St. Thomas, ON. Turner had his hands full keeping his Blue Streak Dodge in front of third-place finisher Peter Gibbons (Canadian Tire Chevy / Stouffville, ON). Gibbons hounded Turner over the final 50 laps but was unable to make a successful pass. Fifth place went to Don Thomson Jr. of Hamilton, ON. His consistent finish was good enough to earn him his first career CASCAR title. By winning the CASCAR Castrol Super Series East crown on Sunday, the Home Hardware Chevy driver made amends for finishing second to Gibbons in the National points chase, which concluded on the Labour Day weekend at Delaware, ON. "This is the most exciting day of my racing career," said Thomson. "Winning the Edmonton National race and the three Eastern races in one year will be something I'll never forget. We added consistency to our program this year and turned it around. Next year, the goal is to win the National championship." Finishing second to Thomson in the final eastern tally was St. Thomas, ON native Peter Vanderwyst. The Loctite Chevy racer could do little but hope for Thomson to encounter trouble during the CARQUEST 200, but that failed to occur. In the end, Vanderwyst's sixth-place finish left him 34 points shy of Thomson.
