CASCAR: Beauchamp wins pole for Sunday's CARQUEST 200

12 September 1999

FREDERICTON, NB - Ron Beauchamp of Windsor, ON posted the fastest lap
during the rain-delayed Saturday afternoon time trial session at New
Brunswick Int'l Speedway to capture the pole for Sunday's CASCAR Castrol
Super Series East season-ending CARQUEST 200. His single lap time of
14.711 seconds was the best of the 22 drivers who participated in qualifying.
The Fredericton, NB area oval is where the Mopar Performance Parts Dodge
driver earned his first CASCAR crown, last year, and he is looking to
Sunday's 200 lap race to provide another happy Maritime memory.
In terms of this year's points chase, Don Thomson Jr., of Hamilton, ON
will start sixth on Sunday, just three spots ahead of his closest pursuer
for the CASCAR East title. St. Thomas, ON racer Pete Vanderwyst (Loctite
Chevy) trails Thomson's Home Hardware Chevy by just 28 points with just
tomorrow's race remaining on the schedule.
During the heat races which followed the time trials, checkered flags went
to new National champion Peter Gibbons (Stouffville, ON / Canadian Tire
Chevy), Eastern rookie points leader Scott Steckly (Milverton, ON / AW
Millwrights - ERB Int'l Pontiac) and Al Long (Carp, ON / Union Energy
Chevrolet).
Local racer Gordon Chase filled in for Maritime racing star Scott Fraser,
behind the wheel of the #00 Riverview Lincoln Mercury / Whitlock
Motorsports Ford Taurus. Fraser, of Shubenacadie, NS, was busy racing in
Maine on Saturday and will return on Sunday to take the wheel of the car,
which Chase must start in Sunday's CARQUEST 200. The green flag is
scheduled to fly at 2:00.
