NASCAR Trucks: Bruce Driver To Race Pennzoil Truck At Richmond Tonight

10 September 1999

Pennzoil Modified racer Bruce Driver will attempt to race in his first
NASCAR Craftsman truck race tonight at Richmond International Raceway.

Driver will pilot the #6 Chevrolet truck owned by Marshall Chesrown, crewed
by Kevin Sasserman and powered by a Richard Childress Racing engine.
Driver's fourth-place finish in the Richmond modified race on May 14 made
him the first African-American to finish in the top five of a NASCAR touring
series in recent history.

"This is what I live for. This is a dream come true," said the 36 year-old
Driver who is in his second full year on the NASCAR Featherlite Modified
Tour. "All I have ever asked for in life is an opportunity and tonight is
the first of what I hope will be many chances. I want to learn as much as I
can tonight, do well for the Pennzoil folks and hopefully get a chance to do
this again."

"Everybody talks about me being a Black racer, but the way I was brought up,
black or white was never an issue," said the Pennington, N.J. resident and
owns a gutter and siding business. "My parents showed us by their example
that if you worked hard and achieved you could move up to a higher level.
Racing is not black and white, it's chemistry."

Driver's team is owned by Hawk Sports Management. Driver was spotted by Don
Hawk at Flemington last year. Hawk said the decision to put Driver in a
truck is something that has been under consideration all year.

"Bruce finished fourth here in the modified race and we thought this would
be the best place to introduce him to truck racing," said Hawk. "We put the
deal together late this week. I don't see colors. I see determination - guts
- potential. Anything else isn't a big issue. Tonight will be all about
seeing how well Bruce can drive."

Driver is 23rd in driver points in the NASCAR Featherlite Modified
Series

Qualifying for tonight's race is 3 p.m. with the race scheduled for
8 p.m. on ESPN2.
