CASCAR: CASCAR Castrol Super Series West resumes in Regina this weekend
9 September 1999
KOMOKA, ON - Action resumes on CASCAR's western front this weekend with the next-to-last CASCAR Castrol Super Series West race of the season; the King's Park 150 at King's Park Speedway in Regina, SK. Entering this Saturday night's race (Sept. 11), former CASCAR West champion Dan Shirley holds a slim, two-point lead over Steve Jefferson, his nearest rival, in the chase CASCAR supremacy in the west. Shirley, who drives the NTN Bearings Chevrolet Monte Carlo, hails from Saskatoon, SK and is looking forward to taking another step toward his second championship, in his home province. Shirley is the defending winner of this race, on the high-banked, third-mile oval. "We had a real good start to the season, but then, it got rough in British Columbia," noted Shirley, of the most recent CASCAR West events. "We had an overheating engine at Quesnel and a flagging deal that hurt us at Prince George. But we did some testing at Regina [SK] and we're ready to go there. Steve Jefferson is two points behind us. We went to the BC races with a 66 point lead - so it's not a big deficit for him to get back. "We want to finish very, very strong. Last year, we crashed in Calgary in the last race and that made for the longest winter ever. We want to make sure that our last two race meets are as strong as they can possibly be, with consistent finishes. We got our bad luck out of the way and we're looking forward to Regina. We'll do well there, because we found some things out when we tested." Jefferson, driver of the Mopar Batteries Dodge, has put together several consistent runs of late and has narrowed the gap in his hunt for his first ever CASCAR crown. He's been close to winning a championship before, and doesn't want it to slip away again this year. "In '96 - the first year I ran the Goodwrench car - I won the first two races of the year," said Jefferson. "And we held the lead right up until the last race of the year, at Edmonton, when we lost the clutch. That was a bit of a heartbreaker. The closest we've ever been to the championship. But we're close again and are hoping to carry through." King's Park 150 Notes: King's Park Speedway is located five miles east of IPSCO on Hwy. 6 North. Qualifying for the King's Park 150 starts on Saturday afternoon at 6:30 p.m., with the checkered flag scheduled to fly on the 150 lap feature race at 7:30. *** Western Point Standings after Round #5 of 7 / As of September 8, 1999: 1. #46 Dan Shirley (Saskatoon, SK / 846 / Chevrolet); 2. #5 Steve Jefferson (Prince George, BC / 844 / Dodge); 3. #33 Don Sales (Quesnel, BC / 796 / Chevrolet); 4. #20 Kim Richard (Calgary, AB / 772 / Chevrolet); 5. #2 Carl Harr (St. Albert, AB / 758 / Chevrolet); 6. #4 Daryl Harr (St. Albert, AB / 754 / Chevrolet); 7. #44 Fred DelPero (Edmonton, AB / 746 / Ford); 8. #12 Ron Larson (Quesnel, BC / 720 / Chevrolet); 9. #15 Mike Browne (Calgary, AB / 700 / Pontiac); 10. #93 Charlie Kirton (Saskatoon, SK / 692 / Chevrolet); 11. #6 Todd Nichol (St. Albert, AB / 674 / Chevrolet); 12. #35 Kevin Dowler (Edmonton, AB / 640 / Ford); 13. #79 Wade Lee (Calgary, AB / 624 / Pontiac); 14. #14 James VanDomselaar (Ft.
