American Axle & Manufacturing Announces New Wheel Bearing Hub BusinessDETROIT, Sept. 7 -- American Axle & Manufacturing, Inc. has announced that it will begin production in December 1999 of four new wheel bearing hubs and races for a new customer, SKF. The parts will be forged at American Axle & Manufacturing's (AAM's) Tonawanda Forge Plant in New York and shipped to SKF's assembly plant in South Carolina where they will be machined, assembled, then delivered to a variety of end-customers. Annual volumes for the four parts range from 100,000 to more than 900,000 units annually. Details of the sales contract were not disclosed. SKF is the world's largest bearing hubs manufacturer with machining and assembly plants around the globe. "This new contract expands our forged product offerings while conquesting new business and diversifying our customer base," said Sales, Marketing & Capacity Planning Vice President David C. Dauch. "We look forward to the launch of these new products," added Ronald J. Allman, general manager of AAM's Forging Division which includes the Tonawanda Forge facility. "It will allow us to apply our latest, leading-edge technology in hotforming to satisfy the requirements of a new customer."
