CASCAR: Gibbons repeats CARQUEST 300 dominance and wins National championship
7 September 1999
DELAWARE, ON - The CASCAR Castrol Super Series declared its new National champion on Sunday afternoon at Delaware Speedway Park. No one can accuse Canadian Tire Chevrolet Monte Carlo driver Peter Gibbons of backing into his first National crown. The Stouffville, ON native led twice during the CARQUEST 300 for a total of 101 laps en route to victory - for the second consecutive year - in Canada's biggest stock car race. Finishing second to Gibbons was Ford Fast Lane Taurus driver Kerry Micks. The Mt. Albert, ON racer started deep in the field of 35 CASCAR Super Series drivers and progressed steadily throughout the event, even overcoming a flat tire earlier in the afternoon. The final podium position went to Loctite Chevrolet Monte Carlo driver Pete Vanderwyst. On the strength of the showing, the St. Thomas, ON native climbed to fourth in the final National rankings. Don Thomson (Home Hardware Chevrolet / Hamilton, ON) fell short in his quest to win a National title and finished second in the points by 84 markers. St. Thomas, ON racer DJ Kennington was third after the fourth and final National event of the summer, just six points back of Thomson.
