CASCAR: Whitlock wins pole for CARQUEST 300 / Heat victories for Gibbons and Neely
5 September 1999
DELAWARE, ON - Time trials and heat races for Canada's biggest, oldest and richest stock car race were held on Friday night at Delaware Speedway Park. Reigning National champion Dave Whitlock changed motors in his Ford just prior to the time trial session and posted the quickest lap of the day to grab the pole for Sunday's CARQUEST 300; the fourth and final CASCAR Castrol Super Series National event of the season. In the first of two 100-lap qualifying heat races held soon after, National points leader Peter Gibbons took the win in his Canadian Tire Chevrolet Monte Carlo. With the victory, the Stouffville, ON native will carry a solid 66 point lead into Sunday's 18th running of the CARQUEST Labour Day classic. The other heat was won by Champion Spark Plug Dodge driver Rob Neely, of Milton, ON. He's been having a string of bad luck, of late, and with the win returns to contention in the CASCAR hierarchy. A Final Qualifiers' race will be held on Saturday night at the London, ON area half-mile oval, which will set the remainder of the field for the CARQUEST 300.
