Johnson Controls Acquires Two Manufacturing Plants From German Automotive Interior Supplier Benecke-Kaliko
PLYMOUTH, Mich., Sept. 2 -- Johnson Controls has
acquired two manufacturing facilities from Hannover, Germany-based automotive
interior supplier Benecke-Kaliko AG. Financial details of the transaction --
which was finalized in July -- were not disclosed.
With the deal, Johnson Controls gains Benecke-Kaliko vehicle headliner
plants in Peine and Uberherrn, Germany. The facilities supply products for a
variety of vehicles bearing the Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Opel and Volkswagen
nameplates. The transaction also adds new roof-reinforcing technologies that
will allow Johnson Controls to integrate premium components -- including head-
protection airbags -- into headliner systems and interior pillar products.
Johnson Controls is a leading global supplier of automotive interior
systems.
    "Benecke-Kaliko has wide-ranging expertise in headliner-carrier
technologies," said Giovanni Fiori, president of Europe and South America for
Johnson Controls. "This acquisition strengthens our market position in
overhead systems, and will help us solidify our standing as the leading
interior systems supplier in Europe."
Benecke-Kaliko is the top headliner supplier for the German market, and is
the fourth-largest supplier of vehicle roof systems in Europe. Johnson
Controls will integrate the two Benecke-Kaliko facilities into its worldwide
interiors business.
Vehicles supplied with headliners and pillar products by the Uberherrn and
Peine plants include: the Audi A4, A6 and A8; Mercedes-Benz C-Class, E-Class,
SL and SLK; Opel Omega Caravan; and Volkswagen Bora, Caravelle, Golf, Passat
and Transporter.
The Plymouth, Michigan-based automotive operations of Johnson Controls
will supply interior products for more than 22 million vehicles in 1999 and
achieved US$9.3 billion in sales for the 1998 fiscal year.
Johnson Controls, Inc. is a global market leader in automotive systems and
facility management and control. In the automotive market, it is a major
supplier of seating and interior systems, and batteries. For non-residential
facilities, Johnson Controls provides building control systems and services,
