Johnson Controls Acquires Two Manufacturing Plants From German Automotive Interior Supplier Benecke-KalikoPLYMOUTH, Mich., Sept. 2 -- Johnson Controls has acquired two manufacturing facilities from Hannover, Germany-based automotive interior supplier Benecke-Kaliko AG. Financial details of the transaction -- which was finalized in July -- were not disclosed. With the deal, Johnson Controls gains Benecke-Kaliko vehicle headliner plants in Peine and Uberherrn, Germany. The facilities supply products for a variety of vehicles bearing the Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Opel and Volkswagen nameplates. The transaction also adds new roof-reinforcing technologies that will allow Johnson Controls to integrate premium components -- including head- protection airbags -- into headliner systems and interior pillar products. Johnson Controls is a leading global supplier of automotive interior systems. "Benecke-Kaliko has wide-ranging expertise in headliner-carrier technologies," said Giovanni Fiori, president of Europe and South America for Johnson Controls. "This acquisition strengthens our market position in overhead systems, and will help us solidify our standing as the leading interior systems supplier in Europe." Benecke-Kaliko is the top headliner supplier for the German market, and is the fourth-largest supplier of vehicle roof systems in Europe. Johnson Controls will integrate the two Benecke-Kaliko facilities into its worldwide interiors business. Vehicles supplied with headliners and pillar products by the Uberherrn and Peine plants include: the Audi A4, A6 and A8; Mercedes-Benz C-Class, E-Class, SL and SLK; Opel Omega Caravan; and Volkswagen Bora, Caravelle, Golf, Passat and Transporter. The Plymouth, Michigan-based automotive operations of Johnson Controls will supply interior products for more than 22 million vehicles in 1999 and achieved US$9.3 billion in sales for the 1998 fiscal year.
