Subaru Announces August Sales Figures; Best Sales Month in 12 Years
    CHERRY HILL, N.J., Sept. 1 -- Subaru of America, Inc. (SOA)
today announced its August sales figures.  Subaru recorded a sales total of
15,348 units for the month, up nine percent over the same period last year
(14,068 units).  Year-to-date totals of 100,826 units are up nine percent over
1998 year-to-date totals of 92,895 units.  This marks the company's best sales
month since 1987.
    The Legacy model line led sales with 8,504 units posted.  The Outback
recorded its best-ever sales month with 6,434 units, a 21 percent increase
over August 1998 Outback sales.  Forester posted sales of 4,448 units, an
increase of 12 percent over the same month last year.
    Impreza also posted a record month at 2,396 units -- its best sales month
in two years.  The company attributes this, in part, to the new Impreza 2.5 RS
Sedan, introduced in early August.
    Subaru of America, Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Fuji Heavy
