    HOUSTON, Sept. 1 -- H. Lee Scott, vice chairman and chief
operating officer of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. has been elected to the Board of
Directors of Cooper Industries, Inc. .  His appointment fills a
vacancy created by the September 1999 scheduled retirement from the Board of
Harold S. Hook, retired chairman, American General Corporation.
    Scott, 50, became vice chairman and COO of Wal-Mart Stores in 1999 with
responsibilities for Wal-Mart Stores, SAM'S Club and international divisions.
He joined Wal-Mart in 1979 and has served the Company in many capacities
including as executive vice president, logistics, executive vice president of
merchandise and sales and president and chief executive officer of Wal-Mart
Stores.
    "We are delighted to have Lee Scott join our Board of Directors," said
H. John Riley, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Cooper.
"Lee's marketing and leadership experience at Wal-Mart, combined with his
broad knowledge and involvement with transportation, distribution and
logistics issues are clearly assets that will further strengthen Cooper's
Board."
    Scott earned a B. S. in Business from Pittsburg State University in
Pittsburg, Kansas, and was named outstanding alumni in 1995.  He has attended
the Executive Development Program at Penn State University and Columbia
University.  Scott currently serves on the Cancer Challenge board and the
board of the Rogers-Lowell, Arkansas, United Way.
