Colorado Springs Company Placed Among 100 Best In Working Mother Magazine Survey, Released Today

    COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.--Sept. 1, 1999--

TRW Wins Honor for Third Consecutive Year

TRW Inc. whose more than 300 employees in Colorado Springs include many working mothers, was named as one of the nation's '100 Best Companies' by Working Mother magazine.
1999 marks the 3rd consecutive award and the sixth time this decade that Working Mother magazine has selected TRW for this honor. According to Working Mother magazine's 14th annual report on the 100 Best Companies for Working Mothers, companies are becoming more sophisticated about work/life policies as they continue to gain bottom-line benefits from them.
The magazine rates companies on six criteria: pay; opportunities for women to advance; child care; flexibility; work/life supports, such as counseling and support groups for employees; and other family-friendly benefits, such as extended maternity and parental leave, as well as adoption aid and elder care.
"Balancing the demands of the workplace with those of everyday life can take its toll on even the most organized and energetic person," said Dale Gardner, Colorado Springs Site Manager for TRW Space & Missile Systems. "We've worked hard at TRW to create an environment that enables our employees to attend to ever changing personal and family needs while achieving their professional goals. TRW's policies have paid-off for us here in Colorado Springs by helping us hire and retain highly capable working mothers," added Gardner.
TRW is the prime contractor at the Ballistic Missile Defense Organization's Joint National Test Facility (JNTF) located at Schriever Air Force Base, just one of several key TRW programs in the Colorado Springs area.
Over the years, TRW has developed a wide range of programs and benefits at its individual locations that respond to family and community needs. Among them are flexible work schedules, such as telecommuting and job sharing; dependent care assistance for children and elders; managerial and professional developmental programs; rewards for innovation and achievement; financial support for education; scholarship programs; stock savings plan; employee fitness programs and centers; and a worldwide health assistance program.
The TRW contributions programs support nonprofit community organizations, educational institutions, and arts and cultural organizations where the company's employees work and reside.
Many of these programs are in place in Colorado Springs. Over the past year, TRW sponsored four children from the Challenger Middle School to attend the U.S. Space Camp in Huntsville, Ala.; participated in the stART smART program which promotes early learning through the arts; provided funding for the local Head Start program; and was the primary sponsor of this year's Special Olympics event on July 31st. TRW also provided a grant to Goodwill Industries to provide vocational rehabilitation and re-training support.
Most recently, TRW announced that it would pursue the Integrated Space Command and Control (ISC2) program managed by the U.S. Air Force Space Command. ISC2 will migrate existing stovepipe systems into an integrated mission architecture, implement new mission capability, interface with other command and control mission systems, and provide U.S. Space Command, NORAD, component commanders, and others with an integrated, common global battlefield picture based on shared, real-time data.
Other TRW programs in the Colorado Springs area include designing, developing, and integrating the Battle Management Command, Control, and Communications (BMC3) system for the National Missile Defense program. BMC3 work is performed at the JNTF and in Huntsville, Ala.
