Mannesmann: Further Portfolio Adjustments in Engineering

    DUESSELDORF, Germany, Aug. 31 -- Mannesmann has continued the
process of optimizing its Engineering sector with the sale of the business
units Facility Management and Facade Cradles.  The two business units generate
sales of approx. 210m euros with around 1,800 employees.
    The final contracts have now been signed for the joint venture in the
field of metallurgy, SMS Demag, for which agreement in principle was reached
with SMS last year.  Mannesmann Demag Krauss-Maffei holds a 28% stake in the
new company which will start its business activities on September 1, 1999.
