Air Bag Shipping Exemption Granted to United Recyclers Group

Department of Transportation Grants Air Bag Shipping Exemption to United Recyclers GroupDENVER, Aug. 27 -- Today, United Recyclers Group (URG) is pleased to announce that it has obtained an exemption for its Partners to transport in commerce air bag modules or seat belt pre-tensioners from the Department of Transportation (DOT). URG Partners may ship these devices without marking the EX number or product code on the manifest. This exemption also allows any receiver of a package covered by this exemption to reoffer it for transportation provided no modifications or changes are made to the package. Thousands of air bags are shipped each year by automotive recyclers, which represents millions of dollars in revenue. Auto recycling is a $8 billion industry, with over 7,500 operators in North America. "This exemption will allow our Partners to ship air bags, which had been difficult if not impossible previously. This is just one of the many ways that URG works together to accomplish goals we just couldn't do individually," says Carol Roedder, Modern Imports, St. Louis, MO, and URG Manager. URG is a partnership of over 350 auto recyclers throughout the U.S. and Canada that participate in many joint programs including co-op buying, group advertising, shared training, Internet projects and the development of the Pinnacle(TM) system, an advanced inventory management system for URG Partners. Prior to achieving this exemption, automotive recyclers were required by the Department of Transportation to furnish the EX number or product code on the shipping manifest. The EX number and product code can only be provided by the manufacturer, which does not publish them, limiting the ability to ship air bags.
