Speedway Motorsports Announces 13,000 New Seats At Bristol Motor SpeedwayCONCORD, N.C., Aug. 26 -- Speedway Motorsports today announced that Bristol Motor Speedway will add approximately 13,000 seats to the existing 134,000-seat facility. "Our engineers worked extra hours to design an innovative double-decker grandstand to accommodate additional demand for NASCAR Winston Cup and Busch Series events at Bristol," stated Bruton Smith, chairman and chief executive officer of Speedway Motorsports. The grandstand addition will be completed for the 2000 spring Winston Cup and Busch Series weekend at Bristol. Bristol Motor Speedway, located in Bristol, Tennessee, will host the Goody's Headache Powder 500 NASCAR Winston Cup Series and Food City 250 NASCAR Busch Series events on August 27 - 28. "Things are looking great for this weekend," stated Jeff Byrd, vice president and general manager of Bristol Motor Speedway. "We are sold-out for the Goody's 500 this Saturday and we expect a record crowd for the Food City 250 Friday." Speedway Motorsports purchased Bristol Motor Speedway in January 1996 for approximately $27 million. At that time, the facility had 71,000 permanent seats. Seizing upon the demand for tickets at Bristol, Speedway Motorsports embarked upon a capital improvement plan, which refurbished the entire facility. Seating doubled and the new stands and improvements provide better sight lines, easier access to restrooms and concession stands and a unique mezzanine level concourse." "This Bristol acquisition has proved to be a phenomenal success," stated H.A. "Humpy" Wheeler, chief operating officer and president of Speedway Motorsports. "The remainder of our event calendar looks good. Strong ticket sales continue for the UAW-GM Quality 500 NASCAR Winston Cup and Busch Series weekend at Lowe's Motor Speedway on October 9-10 and the NAPA 500 NASCAR Winston Cup weekend at Atlanta Motor Speedway on November 20-21."
