Global Engineering Documents and the National Electrical Manufacturers Association Announce the Release of the Revised Motors and Generators Standard
ROSSLYN, Va.--Aug. 26, 1999--NEMA, the National Electrical Manufacturers Association, in cooperation with Global Engineering Documents, the world's leading distributor of industry, U.S. and international standards, announces the release of the revised version of its much anticipated Motors & Generators, MG 1-1998, standard. Available for immediate delivery through Global, MG 1-1998 assists users in the proper selection and application of motors and generators."I consider myself fortunate to have been a user as well as a participant in helping maintain and expand NEMA Standard MG 1," said Dale Rawlings, Consultant, of The Lincoln Electric Company. "Much of my career has involved the design of electric motors for Lincoln Electric, and Lincoln considers MG 1 to be the premier performance and physical configuration standard for electric motors."
Revised periodically, the standard provides for changes in user needs, advances in technology and changing economic trends. The standard also provides practical information concerning performance, safety, test, construction and manufacture of alternating-current and direct-current motors and generators. Also involved is an appreciation of the problems of manufacture, installation and use derived from consultation with and information obtained from manufacturers, users, inspection authorities and others having specialized experience.
The new MG 1 contains several significant additions and revisions. Concerning Stated Parts 30 and 31: Inverter-Fed Motors, which take into account evolving technology, Steve Stretz, Director, Corporate Engineering, of Leeson Electric commented, "Motor/inverter systems are the wave of the future in the motor industry and it is important that MG 1 keep up with the technology."
Nirmal Ghai of the Leroy Somers Division of Emerson Electric Co. feels that the combination of all generator information into one part, the new Part 32, will simplify life for users. "The same is true for the newly revised Part 4 that combines all dimensional information that previously was in both Part 4 and Part 11," he said.
Noting MG 1's importance to the electro industry, Jim Dowell, Manager Industry Standards, of MagneTek Inc., said this is the only U.S. standard for electric machines. "Without MG 1, there would be no standardization among manufacturers. Users would not be able to effectively plan installations or have confidence that replacement machines would fit the mountings or other dimensional aspects of the installation," he said.
According to Bill Finley, Manager of Engineering of Siemens Energy & Automation, MG 1 is certainly a one-of-its-kind, world-class standard. "Because of the physical layout of the publication and the annual revision schedule, it is a dynamic document that is constantly evolving, thereby providing the user with the latest information and technological updates," he said.
Rawlings agreed, noting that: "Not only is MG 1 a U.S. standard, but it has also been accepted by Canadian motor manufacturers as the Canadian motor and manufacturing standard. In addition, MG 1 is distributed around the world and is the reference standard for motor purchasers and off-shore manufacturers who want to sell motors in the U.S."
