GPS Rollover a Non-Issue for Products Incorporating Motorola GPS

NORTHBROOK, Ill.--Aug. 26, 1999--Motorola announced today that it has not received any concerned GPS customer inquiries, an early indication that all Motorola GPS products successfully handled Saturday's week number rollover without issue. In addition, Motorola's own internal product monitoring efforts confirm that its Oncore family of GPS products, integral to many of the world's smart consumer, transportation, wireless and precise-timing applications, such as automotive telematics systems and cellular infrastructures, weathered the rollover as predicted - without interruption.
The Global Positioning System, which incorporates time measurement based on a 1,024-week cycle, began timekeeping almost 20 years ago on January 6, 1980. The clock rolled to 0000 at midnight Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) on August 22, 1999.
"All our GPS products were designed to properly handle the rollover, so we have essentially been prepared for this GPS event since Motorola began manufacturing GPS products in the 1980s," said Paul Dowell, GPS Products Manager, Motorola. "Motorola is pleased to report that, as expected, none of our GPS customers have reported any adverse effects. Nevertheless, we provided 24-hour a day technical support in case our customers had any questions concerning the event."
Motorola provided customers with a toll-free number and offered application information on Motorola's GPS Web site at http://www.oncore.motorola.com. In addition, Motorola employees were available during and immediately following the rollover to handle any customer inquiries.
Motorola's GPS Products business is part of Motorola's Integrated Electronic Systems Sector (IESS), a leading provider of embedded electronic solutions. IESS designs and manufactures electronic products and systems for automotive, communications, imaging, manufacturing systems, computer, consumer and industrial markets. The sector's sales activities cover worldwide markets and corporate headquarters are located in Northbrook, Illinois.
Motorola is a global leader in providing integrated communications solutions and embedded electronic solutions. Sales in 1998 were $29.4 billion.
