Exide Corporation Appoints Alan C. Johnson As President and Chief Operating Officer
    READING, Pa., Aug. 25 -- Exide Corporation , the
global leader in the lead-acid battery business, today announced the
appointment of Alan C. Johnson, formerly an executive vice president with
Federal-Mogul Corporation, as its President and Chief Operating Officer.
    Robert A. Lutz, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Exide
Corporation, said, "Alan is one of the most respected senior executives in the
automotive industry.  His wealth of production and management experience,
coupled with his proven ability to lead a global management team, represents
the ideal combination of skills needed to maintain and expand Exide's position
as the foremost company in its industry."
    Headquartered in Southfield, MI, Federal-Mogul is an automotive parts
manufacturer providing innovative solutions and systems to global customers in
the automotive, light truck, heavy-duty, farm and industrial markets.
    At Federal-Mogul, Johnson, 51, was responsible for powertrain systems, a
unit with $3 billion in sales, 70 manufacturing locations and more than 20,000
employees.  As part of his responsibilities, Johnson implemented the Toyota
Production System at Federal-Mogul -- widely regarded as the most efficient
model for heavy manufacturing on a worldwide basis, and now being implemented
at Exide.

Johnson said.
    Johnson received a BA in business from the University of Michigan in 1970
and an MBA in Finance from Wayne State in 1981.  He is a member of the Society
of Automotive Engineers.  He is married and will be moving from Michigan to
Exide's corporate headquarters in Reading, PA.
