Lear Corporation Assists With Earthquake Relief Effort in Turkey
SOUTHFIELD, Mich., Aug. 20 -- Lear Corporation
today announced that it would send $10,000 to the Red Cross to help with
rebuilding efforts after the recent devastating earthquake in Turkey.
Lear has two facilities in Bursa, south of the epicenter of the quake.
Lear executives made contact with Plant Manager Nihat Erdin who reassured them
that Lear people were safe.
"Thank God none of the Lear employees nor their families had any damage,"
Erdin wrote in an e-mail from Bursa. "We lost power and many of the workers
spent the first two nights of this week outside their houses due to their fear
of a second strong earthquake, but the situation is now under control.
"The earthquake has caused extensive damage in the Marmara region in the
northwest, as you probably have seen on TV. We have initiated a campaign in
the plant to collect and donate clothing and other goods that may be needed by
the survivors," Erdin said.
"As a global company, we feel a special connection to the people in each
country where we have a presence," said Ken Way, Lear Chairman and CEO. "We
are thankful that our people in Bursa are safe and praise their efforts to
help their community and their country during this terrible tragedy."
Assistance to the victims of the earthquake in Turkey can be made through
the American Red Cross at 800-HELP-NOW (800-435-7669), specifying that the
donation is intended for Turkish relief. Contributions also can be made
online at http://www.redcross.org
