1999 NADA Data: 1998 Another Record-Breaker For the Nation's Franchised New-Vehicle Dealers
    WASHINGTON, Aug. 20 -- Surpassing many analysts'
expectations, 1998 was another record-breaking year for franchised new-vehicle
dealers, according to the 1999 edition of NADA Data.
    NADA Data is a comprehensive statistical analysis of the franchised new-
vehicle dealership industry conducted by the National Automobile Dealers
Association. It is published annually in the August issue of NADA's Automotive
Executive magazine.
    Some highlights of the 1999 NADA Data:

    *     Franchised dealers sold 15.5 million new-vehicles in 1998, up 3
          percent over 1997 and just under the all-time record set in 1986.
    * Total revenue for franchised new-vehicle dealerships reached a
          record $534 billion in 1998, up 6 percent from the previous year.
    * The average retail selling price of a new vehicle rose 4.2 percent,
          to $23,600, a reflection of consumers purchasing more higher-priced
          trucks, such as sport utility vehicles.
    * Franchised dealers sold 19.3 million used vehicles in 1998, and the
          average retail selling price of a used vehicle rose slightly, to
          $12,500.
    * Parts and service revenue reached a record $64 billion in 1998, up 2
          percent over last year.
    * There were 22,400 franchised dealerships in operation in 1998, down
          200 from 1997.
    *     Franchised new-vehicle dealerships employed a record 1,062,800
          people nationwide.
