1999 NADA Data: 1998 Another Record-Breaker For the Nation's Franchised New-Vehicle DealersWASHINGTON, Aug. 20 -- Surpassing many analysts' expectations, 1998 was another record-breaking year for franchised new-vehicle dealers, according to the 1999 edition of NADA Data. NADA Data is a comprehensive statistical analysis of the franchised new- vehicle dealership industry conducted by the National Automobile Dealers Association. It is published annually in the August issue of NADA's Automotive Executive magazine. Some highlights of the 1999 NADA Data: * Franchised dealers sold 15.5 million new-vehicles in 1998, up 3 percent over 1997 and just under the all-time record set in 1986. * Total revenue for franchised new-vehicle dealerships reached a record $534 billion in 1998, up 6 percent from the previous year. * The average retail selling price of a new vehicle rose 4.2 percent, to $23,600, a reflection of consumers purchasing more higher-priced trucks, such as sport utility vehicles. * Franchised dealers sold 19.3 million used vehicles in 1998, and the average retail selling price of a used vehicle rose slightly, to $12,500. * Parts and service revenue reached a record $64 billion in 1998, up 2 percent over last year. * There were 22,400 franchised dealerships in operation in 1998, down 200 from 1997. * Franchised new-vehicle dealerships employed a record 1,062,800 people nationwide.
