TRW to Make $64,500 Corporate Contribution This Week to United Way Community Services as Part of $225,000 Total Donation This Year

    DETROIT--Aug. 18, 1999--TRW Inc. will be providing close to a quarter of a million dollars in corporate and employee donations this year to United Way Community Services in the southeastern Michigan area as part of the ongoing United Way campaign.
    TRW - which now includes the automotive businesses of LucasVarity - will make a $64,500 corporate contribution tomorrow afternoon to United Way in Detroit as part of an estimated $225,000 total for this year.
    The company's automotive operations employ almost 4,000 people in 11 Detroit metro-area locations.
    "TRW's corporate donation to United Way is indicative of our community commitment and expanded automotive presence in the Detroit area," said Robert A. Alberico, vice president of human resources for TRW's chassis systems business in Sterling Heights, Mich. Alberico will make the donation to Virgil H. Carr, United Way Community Services president and chief executive officer.
    "We are very grateful for the ongoing support of TRW to the United Way campaign," Carr said. "TRW's tradition of giving serves as a wonderful example of how corporate and employee involvement strengthens community partnerships and helps improve the quality of life in southeastern Michigan."
    Total contributions from the 1998 United Way campaign helped provide services to more than 1.5 million people in southeastern Michigan through some 130 United Way-supported agencies.
    TRW employees in the Detroit metro area have pledged about $100,000 in contributions to United Way for this year, in addition to the $64,500 corporate contribution. Additionally, combined LucasVarity corporate and employee donations in the Detroit area will exceed $60,000.
    In addition to Detroit, TRW has a strong presence in the Cleveland, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C., metropolitan areas. Here in Michigan, the company has its occupant safety systems headquarters in Washington, chassis systems operations in Sterling Heights, braking systems operations in Livonia and electronics and fastening systems offices in Farmington Hills. There are also facilities in Rochester Hills and Romeo, sales offices in Troy and a side-impact air bag joint venture in Detroit. Other locations include Brighton, Fenton, Fowlerville, and Jackson.
    Through the TRW Foundation, TRW contributed more than $7.2 million in 1998 throughout the world. TRW Foundation grants typically represent about 90 percent of the total TRW contributions program. The Foundation provides support to charitable organizations serving the needs of the public in TRW plant communities and to select educational institutions. Early childhood development and science and technology are among the Foundation's primary areas of emphasis.
