Delphi Invests in Piracicaba FacilityFLINT, Mich., Aug. 17 -- Delphi Automotive Systems is investing $3.9 million in its Piracicaba, Brazil, battery production facility, according to Donald L. Runkle, president of Delphi Energy & Engine Management Systems. $1.8 million will be used to purchase equipment and tooling so that Delphi can produce additional European standard batteries for European automotive manufacturers located in Brazil and for the aftermarket. The addition of these European standard batteries to Delphi's South American portfolio allows Delphi to continue pursuing new business with various manufacturers. Also, Delphi will invest $2.1 million in 1999-2001 to upgrade the fire protection system at the Delphi Energy Piracicaba plant. System upgrades are required as a result of new products and improvements that are being implemented at the facility. "This investment at the Piracicaba facility will allow us to better grow the business and improve our competitiveness," Runkle said. "It is essential that we continue to dedicate capital to projects that will give Delphi Energy a technological edge heading into the next century. Investing in our facilities, equipment and processes will accomplish this." This investment is made in addition to the $168.1 million in investments already committed for the Dynamics and Propulsion sector during the first six months of 1999.
