CASCAR: Thomson recaptures National points lead with win in Edmonton
16 August 1999
EDMONTON, AB - Don Thomson Jr. didn't enjoy being in second place in the hunt for the 1999 CASCAR Castrol Super Series National points championship. The Home Hardware Chevrolet driver, from Ancaster, ON, came to Edmonton's City Centre Airport atop the standings, but saw it slip away on Saturday during qualifying for the Bumper to Bumper Motorsports Classic 250 km. But on Sunday afternoon, the talented racer was able to recover the points lead with a dominant victory in the 87 lap race, held on the 10-turn road course. Hometown favourite Kevin Dowler, driving his Ford Quality Care Taurus, was second in the race. The Edmontonian won this event last year, but was almost 10 seconds behind Thomson at the checkered flag. Third place went to another westerner, Carl Harr. The St. Albert, AB resident ran a steady race for his best-ever CASCAR National event finish. Peter Gibbons of Stouffville, ON sat on the pole for the race, held on the tarmac of the City Centre Airport, but saw his chances for victory slip away when he pitted late in the race and was unable to catch the front runners. The result dropped him from the National points lead. He is now second to Thomson, just eight points behind as the CASCAR National tour heads to Ontario and the final two National events of the season.
