Capstone MicroTurbine Powers NiSource's Micro-Cogeneration System

Capstone MicroTurbine Powers NiSource's First Micro-Cogeneration Energy System

WOODLAND HILLS, Calif.--Aug. 12, 1999--Capstone Turbine Corporation, developer and manufacturer of the first commercial microturbine power generator for the distributed energy market, announced that the Capstone MicroTurbine(TM) is at the heart of a "micro-cogeneration" energy system unveiled at a Walgreen's in Merrillville, Indiana today. The small-scale, onsite "total-energy system" was developed and supplied by Energy U.S.A., a subsidiary of NiSource Inc., of Hammond, Ind. (formerly NIPSCO Industries). It is a single system that provides energy for heating and cooling needs, as well as for electricity.
The Capstone MicroTurbine is a compact, clean electric power generator that operates on the same principle as the jet engine, but with the cost efficiencies of an automotive turbocharger. In cogeneration applications, the MicroTurbine's clean, 500-degree Fahrenheit exhaust heat is captured by a heat recovery unit and reused for heating, cooling, drying or other purposes. At the Walgreen's installation, the exhaust energy will be used to power the building's air conditioning.
"We are impressed with NiSource's leadership in making onsite, total-energy systems a reality," said Ake Almgren, Capstone's president and chief executive officer. "Micro-cogeneration systems can now offer the economic and environmental benefits of cogeneration to commercial and smaller industrial users. The Capstone MicroTurbine's small size, low emissions, and low maintenance requirements make it ideal for many kinds of distributed generation solutions."
The heat recovery unit was developed and manufactured by Modine Manufacturing Company of Racine, Wisconsin.
