SRI Consulting Predicts That Bundling Services is Key to Intelligent Transportation's Success
MENLO PARK, Calif.--Aug. 12, 1999--According to the new Service Providers report issued by SRI Consulting -- the business consulting arm of SRI International -- the bundling of commercially-significant Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) will provide unprecedented in-vehicle communication technology elements. This packaging of information, navigation, and protection services will deliver advanced ITS services to a variety of transportation management systems, such as, vehicle safety and control systems, commercial vehicle operations, and advanced traffic management systems.
The report, number six in a series of eight, looks at the traditional ITS market segments and applies generic service models in order to highlight the existing state of the service market, future plausible outcomes, and the challenges facing companies that currently drive the development of ITS services.
The report also identifies the key elements that make up an ITS service and the type of companies that are active at each stage.
"ITS services can be split into three broad groupings: information services, navigation services, and protection services," explains Dave Benson, senior consultant for the ITS program at SRI Consulting and recognized authority in the industry since 1993.
"Information, navigation, and protection services share many common technology elements -- in particular location and communication -- and considerable overlap occurs. This overlap is particularly important for the bundling of services that we believe is critical to success."
