CASCAR: Vanderwyst wins Mopar Parts 300 with late race pass

8 August 1999

CALGARY, AB - The first round of the four race CASCAR Castrol Super Series
National championship was held at Calgary's Race City Motorsport Park on
Sunday afternoon. Following a dramatic pass with just two laps remaining,
Pete Vanderwyst won his first career Super Series race. The St. Thomas, ON
driver was ecstatic with the victory. Less thrilled, however, was second
place finisher Al Turner. The Barrie, ON resident sat on the pole for the
Mopar Parts 300 on the high-banked, half-mile oval and led Vanderwyst with
just three circuits remaining in the 300 lap affair.
As the pair entered the first turn, Vanderwyst's Loctite Monte Carlo -
with its two left-side tires on the infield dirt - got underneath of
Turner's Blue Streak Dodge. Following contact, Vanderwyst emerged with the
lead and led to the checkered flag. After the race, Turner was fuming,
insistent that the winning pass was too rough. Vanderwyst, on the other
hand, contended that Turner slid up the track and he pounced at the opening.
Third place in the Mopar Parts 300 went to Don Thomson Jr. of Hamilton,
ON. He leads the National standings as the tour heads to Edmonton, AB next
weekend for the second National event of the season. Wade Lee of Calgary
was fourth on Sunday afternoon, and was the top finishing Western series
competitor. It was also the best ever finish by a western-based driver in a
National event, held on an oval.
