Stone Joins Mackie Automotive BoardOSHAWA, Ontario, Aug. 6 -- The election of Herbert D. Stone as vice chairman of the board of Mackie Automotive Systems, the global leader in parts sequencing and subassembly for automotive assembly plants, was announced today by F. Alan Smith, Mackie Chairman. "Herb Stone is a nationally renowned industry leader in lean manufacturing and high quality, efficient assembly," Smith said. "He will provide the experience and know-how to position Mackie for further growth and continued industry leadership." Mr. Stone had been manager of the General Motors Truck Assembly Plant in Arlington, Texas and retired July 1, 1999, capping a 42-year career with General Motors. He was appointed manager at Arlington in 1996 and oversaw the conversion of the plant from car to truck production in record time to help GM satisfy the growing demand for truck products. The plant also has been recognized recently for productivity and quality improvements. The Arlington plant currently builds Chevy C/K and GMC heavy-duty full-size pickups, along with Chevy Tahoe, GMC Yukon, GMC Denali and Cadillac Escalade full-size sport-utility vehicles. GM has announced it will invest $400 million to raise plant capacity by 50 percent and to convert the plant to build its all-new full-size truck products beginning in the second half of 2000. "I look forward to joining the board of directors of Mackie Automotive Systems and being a part of the team as Mackie moves forward to the next level of excellence in quality, productivity improvement, people involvement and a focus on safety for all employees," Stone says. Mr. Stone is a native of Sparta, Mich. He received a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Kettering University (formerly General Motors Institute) in 1961 and he attended Stanford University in 1970 as a Sloan Fellow.
