Company Rewards Overachievers With a Taste of the Grand Prix

DENVER--Aug. 4, 1999--Top-performing sales reps are donning racing suits and neck collars - and getting a high-powered pitch of their own. Under an innovative program developed by Internet Communications Corporation , sales reps are rewarded with a weekend of racing and relaxation at a Grand Prix race course in Phoenix, Ariz.
As they trade their offices for the cockpits of Ford Mustang GT's and Formula 1 Fords, these highly motivated employees are getting a taste of life in the fast lane - and a chance to learn real-life driving skills from the pros.
This year's team of participants, including INCC President and CEO John Couzens, spent two days in training and a third day relaxing. They hit the track at speeds approaching 100 mph on the 1.6-mile Grand Prix track at the Firebird International Raceway Complex near Phoenix - part of the Bob Bondurant School of High Performance Driving. The group stayed at the luxury McCormick Ranch & Spa as part of their reward for reaching first-half 1999 sales goals.
But the ultimate reward for these and other eligible company reps is even more exotic. Any INCC reps that reach their 1999 full-year sales goals, including this year's participants, earn a trip to the Grand Prix in Montreux, Switzerland, along with a chance to win a new BMW Z3. Couzens notes that the increased sales generated by the top reps more than makes up for the cost of such trips.
"INCC has the best sales organization among any of our competitors, and we set our sales goals very aggressively," says Couzens. "When our reps can meet and exceed these goals, we know they've overachieved by any industry standard."
Couzens says the President's Club started three years ago as an incentive and reward program. He says the company usually does something different each year, but it looks like they'll be coming back for more high-speed thrills next year.
"It's been such a hit with the sales reps that we've decided to continue with the race car driving program next year," says Couzens. "It's an absolutely exhilarating experience, but one that also teaches the reps real-life driving skills and prepares them for the challenges ahead, both on the road and with our company."
Founded and operated by racing legend Bob Bondurant, the Grand Prix race course and 60-acre facility are 15 minutes south of Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport. Others notables who have used the facility for training include Al Unser Jr., Mark Martin, Rusty Wallace and Jeff Gordon. The facility also has trained the likes of Paul Newman and James Garner for the movies Winning and Grand Prix.
